Making eco-friendly choices is important every day of the year, however the ways in which we can make an impact are especially highlighted throughout the month of April, including Earth Day. If we all make small changes to our daily routines, we can make a huge impact over time.

Here are a few ways you can get involved for Earth Day (and month):

Leave the Car at Home
If you’re able, consider walking or riding a bike instead of driving to your destination. Not only will you be reducing your carbon footprint, but you’ll also help to ease traffic congestion, reduce noise pollution, and will get a breath of fresh air while you’re at it!

Plant a Tree
Planting a tree to honour Earth Day has long been a tradition for showing support and getting involved. And rightfully so! Trees are beneficial to the environment in a number of ways, including production of oxygen and filtering out harmful pollutants from the air.

No room to plant a tree? Consider donating to an organization that promotes the planting and nurturing of trees, like Tree Canada.

This is an important one to remember all year long! Keep electronics and appliances unplugged and turned off when not in use and always remember to turn the lights off when you leave a room. When you consume less power, you conserve the earth’s natural resources and reduce the amount of toxic fumes released by power plants.

Go Vegan
Cutting meat and dairy from your diet can contribute to helping the environment in a number of ways, including conserving water, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating climate change, reducing energy consumption and more!

If completely going vegan seems daunting, try incorporating it into your diet one a week on meatless Mondays! Here are a few climate friendly recipes to get started:

Start Composting
Constantly throwing out food waste with the rest of your garbage? Composting keeps organic waste out of landfills and is an amazing fertilizer for your garden. Here are some ways to get started with compost and what to use it for: How to Use Finished Compost
