A trigger point is a hyper-irritable spot that is painful when compressed. Trigger points are so called because stimulating the point triggers a painful response. Active trigger points cause the client pain. When stimulated, active trigger points refer pain and tenderness to another area of the body that is usually not associated by nerve or dermatomal segment. The pattern of referred pain is generally characteristic of a specific point. Latent trigger points only exhibit pain when compressed, do not refer pain, and may or may not radiate pain around the point. Trigger points, whether latent or active, result in dysfunction.
